Cerkniško polje

This aerial view won the From Above category and was selected by the jury as the overall winner of the 2022 National Geographic Slovenia photo competition.

Lake Cerknica is an exceptional example of an intermittent karst lake: permanent surface water is uncommon in karst because drainage is predominantly subterranean. Its intermittent hydrological regime was first studied by Johann Weikhard von Valvasor, who envisioned a system of underground lakes. Like good science fiction, his explanation was seasoned with grains of truth.
